Known for his highly practiced and refined pencil techniques, Florida Artist Michael G. Hughes captures the energy and fleeting moment of nature, in his unique drawings.
Born in Toronto, Canada in 1961 Michael began drawing and painting at an early age. At 14 he enrolled in a private art school and soon caught the attention of the late Artist, Deece Doran. Michael trained under Doran for four years devoting all of his time, outside of school, to his art.
At 18 Michael was accepted to the Art Center at Central Technical School, in Toronto, where he studied for three years under renowned Artists such as Ed Bartram, Murray Hadaway and Windom Lawrence. During this time Michael won four awards for his work and was invited to participate in several jurried shows, including the annual OCA exhibit.
Michael went on to practice architecture and for 20 years was privately commissioned to design hundreds of exclusive custom residences. Additionally, because of his interest in architecture Michael pursued the study of historical building techniques and became a celebrated designer and handcrafter of Timberframe structures.
Michael integrated his love for pencil and paper into his architectural work and outside of that continued to strictly, refine his drawing techniques. Michael has had several one man shows unveiling one new series of drawings after another; each demonstrating the latest refinement of his intense drawing focus. His works hang in many private collections in both Canada and the United States.
Because of their love for the water and boating Michael and his wife Ruth moved to Florida in 2004 and lived on their boat for a year. After exploring what Florida had to offer the Hughes decided to permanently settle in the Eau Gallie area, in part because of it’s supportive attitude towards the visual arts.
Michael now pursues a full time art career as well as design consulting to an award winning, Florida manufacturer of Geodesic Dome Houses.
